Using met search allowed me to find really helpful academic sources that relate to my dissertation topic. To research the articles, I read though them all or just certain pages for some, I then pulled out useful points and wrote notes that I could use to support my investigation. I continued my research by entering different key words into met search, most of the useful results I got were articles.

I found it useful to go through the index first and read pages with words relating to my topic and it meant I was only reading relevant information and saved time by not having to read the full book. I used the same technique for another book from the library that I discovered using met search, this book is called ‘Fundamentals of Marketing’. I then read the pages that would be relevant and pulled out quotes that would be useful to back up my work and wrote notes on them. Therefore after my tutorial I began doing research around my three key words At first I looked into the book I was recommended called ‘New Media’, I took out this book from the library and looked through the index for words relating to my topic, there were many. Also, this tutorial made me aware that it wasn’t important at this stage to have a research question but more to do as much relevant research around the topics I want to investigate and hope that an idea for a focus comes form that. I found this tutorial really useful as it gave me a clearer idea of what to write about and helped give me a starting point to begin researching. I was then given some ideas of what to research and recommended some sources to look into including a book called ‘New Media’ by Keli Fury. From this we decided on three new key words that were more relevant to what I wanted to look into, these were media, branding and celebrity. I then had a tutorial with my dissertation supervisor where I shared the ideas I had so far. From these ideas I came up with some possible research questions, some of these were: How does a brand become iconic and successful? What is the effect of using new media vs old media on brand promotion? How can new media help brands target their audience more effectively? Some ideas on this mind map included branding, new media, social media, influencers and iconic. Next I made a mind-map of topic ideas for my dissertation, I did this by writing down what interests me, linking to graphics and some of the ideas previously mentioned.

I found all of these resources really beneficial as they made me aware of what I was expected to write as well as how to write it. These resources included the brief, a guidance document, essay writing techniques, reading and referencing techniques, information on how to write a research question and more. Then to gain a better understanding of what was required to produce a successful dissertation proposal I went through all of the resources provided by my supervisor. After filling out the planning form with all the above information, I was allocated a dissertation supervisor that would be most suitable for my topic. I was also undecided at this point of what type of dissertation I wanted to produce but I knew I wanted to either write an 8000-10000 word thesis or a 6000 word analytical text and accompanying artefact. A possible question that I came up with based on the topics previously discussed was, ‘What makes a brand become iconic and how does that effect its success?’ This was a very initial idea as I wasn’t yet sure on what I definitely wanted to research however this form made me realise that I am definitely interested in branding and want to look into it more. I then decided on some key brands that I would use as case studies, these were Coca-Cola, Apple and Nike. I chose these words as I am interested to find out how brands become iconic and how much of an impact graphic design has on a brands success. For the planning form I first had to come up with three key words associated with my research, the three key words I chose were: iconic, graphics and impactful. I overcame this by filling out a planning form, this really helped me to begin thinking about initial ideas. I began this dissertation proposal module with very vague ideas of what I wanted to write about in my dissertation.
